Festival Highlights 2009 30/11/2009 A sepcial edition of Holyrood Highlights looking back on this year's Festival of Politics.
Festival of Politics - David Owen 22/08/2009 He became one of the UK’s youngest Foreign Secretaries, under the Premiership of James Callaghan, and played an instrumental role in bringing independence to Zimbabwe. Yet he left the Labour Party in the early 80s, becoming one of the breakaway “Gang of Four” founding members of the SDP. Join David Owen as he discusses his experience of the changing face of British politics, and the influence of hubris on politicians, as developed in his most recent book, In Sickness and In Power. Chaired by Alex Fergusson MSP, Presiding Officer.
Festival of Politics - Scottish Youth Theatre 'Love But Her' 22/08/2009 To mark the year of Homecoming, Scottish Youth Theatre perform a revival of Lara Jane Bunting’s play Love But Her, which tells the story of Jean Armour – the wife of Robert Burns – from her early days, to life and death in Dumfries. Featuring Burns’s songs and poems, the piece charts their great love and turbulent relationship, his infidelities, and their grief for the deaths of their children, together with the challenges faced by Jean as she changed from being the wife of a farmer to that of a celebrity poet.
Festival of Politics - Young People's Question Time 21/08/2009 Are young people today interested in politics? The tens of thousands of young visitors to the Scottish Parliament, during its first 10 years, and the campaign undertaken by The Glasgow Girls against dawn raids on asylum seekers, suggests they are. In the first event of its kind at the Festival of Politics, join young people from across Scotland as they pose questions and comments on the issues that affect them to a panel of politicians and renowned social commentators – both young and not so young! Chaired by Channel 4 and Off the Ball’s Stuart Cosgrove.
Festival of Politics - Sustainable Places 21/08/2009 The six Future Scotland Debates offer a public platform for discussing the future of Scotland’s built environment. In this debate, writer and academic Germaine Greer, Director of The Design Museum, Deyan Sudjic, and eco-architect, Peter Clegg address the question: “What do we mean by ‘sustainable places’ and how can these best be delivered?”. Chaired by Lesley Riddoch.
Festival of Politics - Clare Short , A Life in Politics 20/08/2009 With a Parliamentary career spanning 26 years – which ultimately saw her appointed as the UK’s first Secretary of State for International Development – the now independent MP for Birmingham Ladywood, Clare Short, discusses her life in politics and the issues that are important to her, including the war in Iraq, international development, climate change, and the need to make “politics fit for purpose”. Chaired by Alasdair Morgan MSP, Deputy Presiding Officer.
Festival of Politics - Climate for Change 20/08/2009 Not only has the recent collapse in the global economy devastated peoples lives, it appears to have pushed the ever-increasing threat of climate change from people’s minds. Yet could the economic crisis present an opportunity to build a sustainable future? Join Nicholas Stern – renowned author of The Stern Review and A Blueprint for a Safer Planet, Leo Murray – Media Producer of The Age of Stupid, and Andrew Price, author of Slow-tech: Manifesto for an Over-wound World, as they discuss how our economically destructive past could become an environmentally sustainable future. Chaired by Louise Macdonald, Chair of RSA Scotland.
Festival of Politics - Dennis Canavan 20/08/2009 Formerly a long-serving Labour MP, Dennis Canavan was elected as an independent Member of the Scottish Parliament from 1999-2007. A long time supporter of devolution, he has championed many issues, such as the abolition of corporal punishment, the promotion of sport, and the designation of St Andrew’s day as a national holiday in Scotland. Join him as he reflects on his life in politics, and the issues he holds dear. Chaired by Trish Godman MSP, Deputy Presiding Officer.
